What is Corten steel?

Our bowl is not just a product; it's an element that gains its unique character over time. The bowl is made of Corten steel, a material that develops a thin, rust-colored patina when exposed to atmospheric conditions. Unlike ordinary rust, this layer is stable and sealed; it does not peel or flake off. Its main purpose is to protect the steel from further, destructive corrosion. The full, deep shade of the protective patina forms over 1-3 years.

The water bowl and the principles of proper corrosion

For your bowl to achieve the right look and last for years, you must provide conditions for the proper development of the patina. The key is a cycle of alternating wetting and drying. Unfortunately, in a bowl where water stands for a long time, this natural process is interrupted, and the metal in contact with water can undergo accelerated, uncontrolled corrosion.

How to care for the water bowl?

To prevent the water in the bowl from damaging the steel, we recommend:

• Regular Emptying: This is the simplest and most effective method. Remember to empty the bowl for the winter, as ice and stagnant water can destroy both the patina and the bowl itself. During the summer season, to support patina development, you can change the water every few days or empty the bowl for short periods, allowing it to dry completely.

• Water Aeration: An additional solution that significantly improves the conditions for rust formation is to use a small fountain or pump that will constantly aerate the water. Water movement supplies oxygen, which is crucial for the proper formation of the patina. However, please note that even with a fountain, we still recommend emptying the bowl for the winter to prevent damage.
